FSYF Guidelines for Overseas AWAL and Globe Trotters Clubs

What do we do?

Activities of AWAL/Globe Trotters clubs must be age- appropriate for teen-agers and pre-teens and include adequate adult supervision. However, when, where, how and who is all up to the club members. The FSYF will provide guidance on what has worked for local clubs on request. The overseas club will create an annual calendar and submit it to the FSYF Board for approval. Some activities of overseas clubs have included dances and beach sports, while some clubs focus on community service activities.

Who can join?

AWAL membership at a post overseas includes all U.S. youth, ages 13-18 (AWAL) and 9-12 (Globe Trotters), whose parents are employed at the embassy or consulate abroad. When appropriate, other young people ages in the expatriate or host community who can benefit from programs supportive of internationally-mobile youth may join.

Whos in charge???

AWAL clubs at overseas posts establish their leadership arrangements. Again, the FSYF will provide guidance on what has worked for the local clubs. AWAL clubs at overseas posts must have a sponsor, such as an employee recreation association that serves the U.S. mission, a post Community Liaison Office, or a school. Under special circumstances, a parent may serve as a sponsor. Regardless of club sponsorship, membership remains open to all U.S. youth whose parents are employed by the embassy or consulate. The CLO is not responsible for the overseas club. Responsibility for the club rests with the teen members and parent volunteers. The CLO may best serve as a liaison to distribute information about activities and serve as a contact for the FSYF Board.

How much does it cost?

The overseas club sets and collects its membership dues, and uses its funds to benefit members at post. An adult sponsor should be made responsible for an AWAL cash account, available to club sponsors and member leaders for events and activities.

An overseas club must purchase one annual $30.00 FSYF membership, to be paid by October 15th each year. The Washington-produced monthly newsletter Wings of AWAL and quarterly, Globe Trotters Here, There and Everywhere, may be reproduced at post for all members of the local club. (If individual overseas club members wish to join AWAL/Globe Trotters Washington, they may obtain memberships through the three-year FSYF family membership application. Additional benefits of joining include membership for the entire family, personal monthly mailings of Wings of AWAL and/or Here, There and Everywhere, inclusion on the email list, and discounted costs for Washington-based AWAL activities when members visit the Washington area.)

At the time an overseas club purchases its FSYF annual membership, it will provide name(s) and contact information for the club sponsor and for club leaders, and a current membership list with names of members, their embassy employee parents, e-mails and mailing addresses.

Rules for Membership

Support for Overseas Clubs

The FSYF and AWAL Washington will support AWAL clubs at overseas posts by:

  1. Sharing information of interest to AWAL members, including availability of publications and reports on activities that are successful for this age group.
  2. Seeking opportunities to exchange information among members, including shared newsletter information and teen teleconferences (speaker-phone long-distance telephone conversations between members of AWAL Washington and AWAL clubs at overseas posts).
  3. Considering requests from overseas AWAL clubs for "seed money" or grants to launch an activity or project by the overseas club.
  4. Providing a webpage on the FSYF website and posting a calendar of events for the club.

The FSYF will make good faith effort to support the overseas clubs in anyway possible.

The FSYF is not responsible for overseas clubs and the FSYF disclaims all liability for overseas clubs. Overseas clubs will indemnify and will hold the FSYF harmless for all matters relating to the overseas clubs. The FSYF and AWAL Washington reserve the right to withdraw support, including financial support, for an overseas club: that fails to make a good faith effort to provide the FSYF with an annual calendar of events, membership list and quarterly financial and activity reports; whose activities violate the above stated guidelines or who is ineligible for membership in the FSYFs AWAL/Globe Trotters Overseas Club Network for any other reason.
