Description:

Exploring identity is an essential part of adolescence, but for Foreign Service kids it can be unexpectedly difficult. The normal developmental process is complicated for teens growing up in the Foreign Service as it can bring up a sense of loss and loneliness that other teens may not experience to the same degree. Foreign Service teens can find it harder to know who they are because the expectations of what is normal often change from place to place. Plus, it can be difficult for parents too - working with MED, international schools, and in accessing mental health care from overseas make an already challenging time even more complex. In this session, Dr. Amanda Sovik-Johnston, owner of Active and Connected, along with therapist and Foreign Service EFM, Jodi Harris, LCSW, will talk about best practices for supporting your teen, and share important signs to watch for so you know when to get extra help.

Learning Objectives:

Gaining an understanding of adolescent development and age-appropriate milestones

Learning how to talk with your teen about important topics related to changes they may be experiencing

Understanding the unique experience of adolescents in the Foreign Service

Learning what to watch for, what to be concerned about, and when to get extra help.
